A Magnolia Bloom for Meghan

I'm too tired to elaborate on the past couple of days! Suffice it to say, for now, that we've had a good time, have seen some wonderful sights, have spent a little time with Luke, though he's very busy with classes, exams, assignments and practices, I have a rather dreadful cold but am not letting it keep me down, though I peter out even more quickly than I was before. Natch!

I did want to take a moment to let Meghan know that we've been thinking about her and we want to wish her a VERY happy birthday! The magnolias are starting to bloom here and they're so pretty! I can't tell you if they smell nice, though, because of the "code in my node". I did find something lovely (or at least I think so) for Meghan here. You'll have to wait for me to mail it from home, though, Meghan!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MEGHAN!

This One's For Kevin

We saw this guy on his scooter today ... scooting along on a busy, 4-lane street! We laughed ourselves silly and I got a photo out the window of the car.

The National Quilt Museum

Tuesday was all about Paducah! It was a beautiful day and Kevin indulged me in a pilgrimage to the National Quilt Museum. It was WONDERFUL! In fact, we both enjoyed it. Such amazing works of art! We saw lots of quilts that I have photos of in books and magazines. It's quite a different experience altogether to see them for real!

Downtown Paducah is so charming! It's very old and there has been a lot of restoration work done. What a lot of antique shops they have! We kicked around there for a bit and, eventually, made our way to the outer edge of town to Hancock's of Paducah - a very BIG quilt store! I bought some fabric! YEAH! That was a goal of mine. By the time we got there, though, I was barely able to move. Between my cold and just having been on my feet so much, I was cooked. But still, I knew I wouldn't likely get back there and so I soldiered on ... happily. And then I slept most of the way back to Louisville and went to bed. Exhausted. But smiling. I wish Mom could have been there with me. You'd have loved all the quilts and fabric, Mom. Next year?

Thanks, Kevin, for spoiling me!

The Spelunking Actons

We picked Luke up after his classes finished at 1:00 on Monday and we drove south about an hour and a half to Mammoth Cave National Park. We spent 2 hours underground. Very cool! Luke had never been in a cave before. It really leaves an impression, especially the first time, I think. Last year was the first time I'd ever been in a cave and that was when we were in the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee last year. I was oooo-ing and ahhhh-ing as if I were watching fireworks!

It was a wonderful day to spend with Luke. He's so busy with exams, assignments, classes and practices that Monday afternoon was the only chance to do something with him during the week, though we'll still see him for dinners this week. The boy has to eat!

The only bad thing about Monday is that I officially have a cold. By night time it was a for sure thing. I had been on the edge of one for a week or more and thought I'd beaten it but I've got it bad now. Yesterday I felt increasingly crappy during the day and today might be the same but I do NOT want to just hole up in my room, lovely as it is.

Game Day. Good Day.

Gotta like that score! Not only was it an exciting win, it was also a thrilling game! There were times during the game when Robert Morris had the lead but, in the end, the Bellarmine Knights owned it. It was great to see all those happy, smiling boys after the game at the lunch.

Luke had his best game yet this season pointwise with 1 goal and two assists. He also had a couple of other good shots on goal. We were so glad to be here to see him play and play well. He made up some missing points from the last two games and so he's now averaging 1 point per game again. That's our 1-Point-Luke! Though I know he would love to elevate that.

There was a tailgate party before the game where we got to know some more of the parents. We had quite a few of us in the cheering section for the game. The weather was awesome, too! Rain and cool weather was forecast but the rain held off until after the game and it was warm enough that I had to take my sweatshirt off during the game. Perfect!

Luke had to finish an assignment for school that's due at 5:00 today ... on a Sunday ... so that's what he's up to after that game. And us? Some wonderful down time at our lovely little b&b before meeting up with some others at a Mexican Restaurant where they serve super margaritas! Or so we're told. I'll let you know if it's true.

Here is the Bellarmine Knight upon his faithful steed, Veritus, situated in the centre of campus. There's a bird on his head. Apparently, this is the largest sculpture in Kentucky. The campus is really very nice ... very hilly and in a nice part of town.

Here is their lacrosse field, flags a flyin'.

We watched practice yesterday. By 1:00, it was so hot ... the sun was beaming down ... that I had to go back to the car and cool down. I had a nap, which was a good thing. It had been overcast when practice started but soon the clouds parted and sun shone through. I can't believe how hot it was! BEAUTIFUL! I got a little nervous after a while, though, because I was distinctly told that if my radiated skin was to be in the sun, I must use sun block, which I had in the car, but which wasn't doing me any good at the time.

Later, a bunch of parents and sons met at a local watering hole where, on Wednesdays, they have all you can drink beer and all you can eat pizza for $10.59, or something crazy like that. Can you imagine that in Saskatchewan? The pizza was very good, too! It was so nice to meet a bunch of parents we hadn't met before. There's a tailgate party at the field before the game tomorrow. Hopefully the forecast will be wrong and it won't be raining! We're so excited to watch tomorrow's game!

And here are Luke and Arden sitting in their lockers. The team finally got their own lockers last month so they're brand new! Much handier now that they're right at the field. Previously, the lockers were in the athletic building quite a ways from the field and what happened is that often the boys would keep their equipment right in their dorm rooms. Two letters --- P U!

Notice the boys' hair? The whole team shaved their heads when they got back to school in January in support of their coach, Jack, who is undergoing really awful chemo treatments and yet hasn't missed a game or a practice yet. Man, oh, man. Luke says he's an absolute machine and I know the boys really worry about him. They see first-hand what he's going through and they are awed by how tough this man is.
I wish my hair could grow back as quickly as Luke's and Arden's does! They just look like they have short hair. I still look like someone who has had chemo.

Okay. Now I'm getting tired again, as I should be. Back to bed. It's just after 3:00 a.m. here.

This Is More Like It!

I'm so glad we're not staying in Luke's dorm room with him! This place is so cute! Here is our room and a couple of views of the 2nd floor sitting room. I just love the way this place has been done. So many little details to enjoy. I like the mix of mostly antiques with a bit of local modern folk art thrown in.

Last night I had a very good sleep without much tossing and turning. Tonight, I was so tired, I was asleep by 9:30 (7:30 Saskatoon time), which is probably why I woke up at 1:30 a.m. and couldn't get back to sleep. That's why I'm here talking to you. I am starting to feel the call of the bed again, though. I need to use a step-stool to get into it!

Could A Mother Be More Proud?

Yes, this is my boy in his dorm room. He and Arden room together. I think they did a bit of tidying before we got there. I must confess, his house keeping skills are on the shoddy side. Or is this "shabby chic"?

Saturday Hair Show From Louisville

It's Sunday by now but this photo was taken yesterday. It looks fluffier. Must be the shampoo.

So we're in Louisville ... pronounced LOOi-vlll. The soft "i" is barely pronounced at all and sometimes not even. While it would appear to be a 3 syllable word, it's pronounced as 2 syllables and the "vlll" is very guttural ... deep in the throat.

The trip went well. No issues except for some untimely hot flashes, one of which had me whipping off my wig on the plane. What the heck ... nobody knew me! It's nice having Kevin around to help me in and out of jackets. The bones in my left arm have been especially achie since Friday. I don't understand that.

With the 2 hour time change, we got in at 10:30 at night and then went directly to Bellarmine to see Luke! YEAH! He helped us unpack and then we joined some of his friends at Shenanigans, their local Irish pub, for a drink. We sat outside, oh yes we did! It was that nice out! People were wearing shorts!

More to come ...

Another Beauty from Uncle Norm

Uncle Norman likes to send photos of their walk by the ocean and lagoon in Nanaimo. And I'm very glad he likes taking photos and very glad he sends some to me. Aren't these grape hyacinths so pretty and otherworldly looking? Click on the photo to see a bigger, better photo. They look like they're growing up on top of a little hobbit home. I want these. I want these now.

I hope the magnolias are in bloom when we get to Louisville. I bet they are! I'll have my trusty camera at my side.

We're Almost Ready!

I'm packing! We have our money converted to American moola. Bonus about our dollars being almost on par. A nice change from last year's trip. That means more wiggle room in my Quilt City, USA shopping! And they have the new Liberty of London line of goods at Target. I might want to check it out. There's even a "Liberty of London print bike"! Wouldn't that be cute? A little hard to pack in my luggage ... and I already have a very cute bike, but still ... one can ogle. And I want to take my wallet to the Museum of Art and Craft, too.

I had a nice conversation with Hannah this morning. She's doing great, which is nice to know before we leave. I talked with Mom and she's doing great, too. Everybody is just fine. No worries. The house and fish sitter is on board.

Last year we left for Louisville right at the end of March and it was just 9 days after my lumpectomy. I remember not being able to move very fast ... having trouble making the distance between gates in Minneapolis and, ultimately, missing our connecting flight. It wasn't because of me, though. We would have missed it anyway. I just remember trying to hurry and getting a little "past myself". This time, I hope to be able to move a little more quickly. I hope I have good stamina while I'm there. If not, it's nice to know we don't have any particular agenda and we're staying in a nice place that will be comfortable for me to hang out in if I need a little more down time. I know it doesn't make any sense, but I have this assumption in my mind that when I come back from Louisville, I will be much closer to recovery ... closer to my true self. I expect to have more energy ... more vim. More vigor. I have no reason to think that but it's a nice thought and maybe I just have to Believe. Own the podium. Own that Liberty of London bike ... hahaha ... now I know I'm dreamin'. Isn't it cute? I might have to settle for a Liberty of London scarf to wear when I'm riding "tiger lily", my creamsicle coloured bike.

I worked this afternoon. That was okay. I was pretty tired, though, so I'm glad I got a bunch of packing done in the morning. I probably wouldn't have been so tired at work if I'd slept better. While my sleep wasn't so violent last night ... my covers were all nicely in place this morning ... I woke often and stayed awake for quite a while. It will be interesting to see how Kevin and I manage while in Louisville with no 2nd bedroom or sofa for either of us to escape to. Yikes!

And now ... the last bit of laundry to do ...

Soon We'll See Luke ...

I can't wait to see Luke and watch some lacrosse. There's so much to remember about getting ready to travel. My brain is feeling a little cramped.

I had a good day today after a strange night. Strange in that I sure must toss and turn a lot judging by the bedding! I woke up shivering at one point only to find all of the blankets on the floor and I couldn't find my sleeping toque, which I still need. My head is often still chilled if I don't have a cap of some kind on. I did end up reading for about half an hour in the middle of the night. It's better than being awake ... in the dark ... remembering horrible lawyers *shudder*. I was a little nervous about the day but I turned out to be just fine once I got past a morning hot flash that caused some delays. Still, I made it to the office by 10:00 and did okay. I'm tired but feeling okay. YEAH! Tomorrow I'll work in the afternoon and then it's off to Kentucky to see our boy. Can't wait! Can't wait!

Luke is number 10 this year. Last year he was number 39.

Everyone's Irish on St. Paddy's Day!

Happy St. Paddy's Day all my Irish friends, which is all of you since everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day!

I remember when friends and I used to take the day off work so we could line up to get into the Baldwin before noon! YIKES! That didn't last so long, but all my life there has usually been at least one green beer involved on St. Paddy's day. I have no plans today ... I poop out so early ... but I'll be doing SOMETHING green, even if it's only a salad, today! You can count on that.

Three More Sleeps To Louisville

I just finished typing a post and then it got lost in cyberland somewhere. Damn! And I'm so tired, I don't have the energy to do it all again. My plan was to go immediately to bed.

So I'll make this 2nd effort quick!

1. Beautiful photo is from Chantelle from their trip to Costa Rica. She sent photos of beautiful flowers, scenery, birds and odd creatures. Looks like such an interesting place to visit.

2. I felt better today. I had a nasty hot flash in the morning, which dropped me into a chair for about an hour before I could muster the energy to move again. For the past two days, the two hot flashes I've had have been especially awful. The previous medically-induced ones were never so debilitating. These ones make my skin feel prickly all over, I feel dizzy, faint and a bit sick. I don't like these. Not one bit! I did get over it, though, and made it to work this afternoon where, bonus, I felt quite good today. I expected to have a nasty headache given that I've been prone to headaches the past few days and, on top of that, there was a very strong paint smell in the building. I'm surprised and happy to say that I did NOT get a headache!

3. Three more sleeps until we're off to Louisville, Kentucky! I was going to start packing tonight but am way too tired. I can start it tomorrow. No biggie.

4. Amazing weather today! So wonderful! I soaked up some sun.

5. I have to go to bed. Good night!

I Want To Feel Like This Photo

Uncle Norm sent some photos of spring in Nanaimo. So beautiful! I can't wait until we get some colour like this. I love this photo, the way the focus is on the branch in the foreground.

I wish I could say I felt as good today as these blooms are pretty. Not so. I just didn't get to "good" today. I have no particular explanation.

I slept okay. The phone woke me earlier than I would have liked ... medical call. I saw my family doctor in the early afternoon for a follow up regarding a few concerns. I don't yet have an appointment with my "groinicologist" yet but my doctor and I are both quite sure that there's nothing to worry about. There's been no more spotting of blood and the doctor who did my ultrasound said everything looked good. The pain and swelling under my arm is down and has been much better since I've been taking care to not overuse my arm.

New problems are that I've had a pretty steady headache for the past few days. My doctor thinks it's a sinus problem based on how I describe it and since it 'tis the season. He's also recommended that I see a physical therapist for my shoulders which both have very limited range of motion right now. They both really hurt if I try to stretch them at all. It will be best to get qualified instructions from a physical therapist on how to slowly and effectively make improvements. I'm surprised that my range of motion has become so restricted so late in the breast cancer treatment game. It really wasn't until a while after radiation that it got as bad as this. I think the Arimidex and even, perhaps, the Tamoxifen has had a lot to do with this. Bummer. I've been off Arimidex for 3.5 months now (and only took it for 6 weeks) and I still feel the effects of it. While things have improved greatly, I still have some trouble that I blame on the Arimidex though it's hard to say how much of it can be tied to the Tamoxifen. It darn well better be preventing a breast cancer relapse, that's for sure! I have yet to discuss options with my Naturopath. I'll do that when we get back from Louisville.

I went to work later in the afternoon ... got there just in time for a coffee break (haha) ... but felt pretty crappy the whole time. I had a nasty hot flash in my office and had to whip my wig off and put my face on the desk. I even felt compelled to take my watch off and I didn't shut my door for fear of losing much needed air. I felt a little sick to my stomach and faint. It lasted longer than most of my hot flashes, which haven't been so many lately.

It's amazing to see so much of the snow disappearing! I'm not complaining. Oh, no!!

Cookie Sunday

I baked. If we have room in our suitcase, I'll take some of these for Luke and his friends. They're the cookie that I make most often and one that will remind Luke of home. I'd better get these into the freezer before Kevin and I eat them all.

Here's the recipe.
Jazzed Up Oatmeal Cookies
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
1-1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
3 cups rolled oats
1-1/2 cups dried cranberries (I like the orange flavoured ones best)
1-1/2 cups chocolate chips (I like the dark chocolate chips best)
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
  • Cream butter with sugars and mix in eggs and vanilla
  • Mix the salt and soda into the flour and add to the creamed mixture
  • Stir in oats
  • Stir in cranberries and chocolate chips
  • Drop in mounds on cookie sheet
  • Bake for 10 minutes
Have one and try to resist a second. If you use the orange flavoured cranberries, they taste even better after a day because the orange flavour intensifies with some time. Yummmm ...

Going Bananas!

Before I start my banana story, take a look at my new banana bowl! Lynn painted it in Mexico and brought it back for us for taking care of Otto (as if that was a chore!). Isn't it nice?

Okay. Banana story. This is crazy. If you didn't think I was nuts already, you surely will now. And you should. Even I think I'm nuts. Bananas, actually.

You see ...

As you might recall, after a few bad days last week where I had a lot of bone pain in my arms, I mentioned that the only thing I had done differently at the time the pain suddenly subsided was get back to eating my daily banana after missing for a few days when I'd run out. It just seemed odd to me that the only days my arms ached so badly were the only days I hadn't had a banana. It's the only thing in my life that was different. I didn't give it any further thought because, of course, the whole idea is ludicrous! I thought about the potassium angle but my last blood work indicated that my potassium was in the normal range and besides, does potassium have anything to do with bone pain? Not that I'm aware of, though I haven't researched it. Yet.

Then ...

Yesterday I woke up feeling pretty good despite the duvet wrangling I must have been doing all night. Kevin and I went out in the afternoon to run some errands. As the afternoon went on, I noticed that my arms were starting to ache and I was having more trouble with my lower limbs as well. By the time we got home from the grocery store at 6:00, it was all I could do to leverage myself out of the car and waddle to the house. And my arms really ached to use for anything at all. I said to Kevin, "I didn't have a banana today. That couldn't possibly be it, could it?" He said, "For God's sake, eat a banana!". So I did ... before the rest of the groceries were even unpacked. It couldn't hurt, right? And oddly enough, by the time I went to bed last night, my arms weren't nearly as sore and I was walking better, too. But that's crazy! I don't believe it's a placebo effect because I really can't believe that eating a banana could possibly make such a noticeable difference. So, call me bananas, but I'm sticking with my daily banana. Kevin said we'll have to stop and buy some as soon as we get to Louisville on Friday. I think he's right.

I had my banana today. So far, so good. Crazy. Bananas!
