In order to grow beyond a very small size, tumors must induce angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels. Blocking this step is one strategy for fighting cancer. Ellagic acid, a flavonoid found in numerous berries, pomegranates and other foods, has been shown to inhibit breast cancer in cell and animal studies. Now a new study has described the mechanism of action by which ellagic acid inhibits angiogenesis.
