A Reminder to Eat My Broccoli

"Research shows that Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts, can help prevent cancer and ward off heart disease. Cruciferous vegetables contain a compound called indole-3-carbinol (I3C – a potent antioxidant that breaks down estrogen in the body) that reduces the risk of breast cancer and other estrogen-sensitive cancers, like cancer of the ovaries and cervix. Other studies have shown that broccoli can help fight cervical dysplasia, a precancerous condition. Broccoli also contains other protective constituents like beta-carotene, which can help prevent cancer and heart disease." (Link)

Research has concluded eating broccoli can protect against asthma and lung disease. (Link)

"despite the view of many that osteoarthritis is an inevitable part of aging, researchers at the University of East Anglia (UEA) believe they are hot on the trail of a way to prevent this form of arthritis from developing in the first place. The potential solution? A natural, bioactive compound called sulforaphane that is found in cruciferous vegetables, especially broccoli." (Link)
Whatever the state of the research, we know that broccoli is a "super food" and it's very good for us.  I try to eat it several times a week.  I don't eat it every day, but I should. When I don't eat broccoli, I try to make sure I get in a serving of some other cruciferous vegetable.
